Local volunteer awarded an OAM in Australia Day Honours
Congratulations to Des Lawson OAM, of Lota after being honoured in this week’s 2022 Australia Day Honour Awards. Des was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in the General Division for service to the community through a range of organisations and initiatives.
He has volunteered in various organisations nationally, but in the Wynnum Manly District he has provided leadership, mentoring and dedication to seeing our community grow and host events. Des has been a member of Port of Brisbane Rotary for over 20 years and during this time he has been President and District Governor for Rotary International and their Magazine Group Representative.
In addition he has been and continues to be a member and strong advocate for health issues including mental health research by Australian Rotary Health and involved with the Australian Rotary Health Indigenous Health Scholarship program.
He is an inaugural member of the Australia Day Breakfast Committee, Kite Festival, and the Wakerley Christmas Carols. Each of these events are attended by thousands of people annually, when held. These are just some of his achievements.
