Toy shop closing after 40+ years
Closures continue in Wynnum Central where the Mr Toys toy shop in Edith Street is calling it a day, officially closing this coming Saturday 22nd February. They are directing all enquiries after this date to their shop in Capalaba.
WynnumCentral has been reliably informed that there has been a toy shop in this location for at least 40 years, and, apart from the supermarket, is the closest Wynnum has to an ‘anchor tenant’, staying open long hours and drawing parents and children into Wynnum.
Comments from staff point to the fact that they are often the only shop open in the afternoon at the weekends and that therefore they lose out to local shoppers who need to get other shopping items at the same time and consequently do that shopping elsewhere.
The closure of the toy shop is likely to further impact trading in Wynnum Central. What are your thoughts? Do you remember visiting the toy shop in Wynnum longer than 40 years ago? If so, let us know in the comments below.
Other shops open/reopen
As the toy shop closes, other shops are opening or re-opening. The fruit and veg shop next door to Oliver’s Bakehouse in Edith Street has recently reopened, and a new ladies clothing shop has opened a few doors up towards Bay Terrace.
At the same time Heavenly Books Christian bookshop in Bay Terrace has closed its doors. So, whichever way you look at it, the retail landscape in Wynnum is undergoing a change. What do you think of the changes?
So sad to see this business close. I really feel for them, but it’s true, every Saturday and Sunday afternoon the Toyworld is the only business open along Edith street. To be honest, they’ve been a great business but I am truly surprised they lasted this long. Good luck to the staff.
V sad to see this shop close too.. have fond memories of buying special toys and scooters there for the grandchildren and every Christmas buying up big for the Wynnum Central Station’s Toy Collection boxes (that’s ceased too!). Thanks to all the staff for hanging in there and for your excellent service, including to the young male shop assistant who spent ages with me last Christmas trying out all the radio controlled cars till I found the one my granddaughter could use.
so sad about this I did all my Xmas and Birthday shopping here, and could always get special things for gifts, thank you for the wonderful service over the past 43 years ( for us)
RIP
Good news….Heavenly Books still continues as a mobile bookshop…only the shopfront has closed. We will be doing the Edith Street markets each month and we are looking at doing the Manly markets and other venues in the near future. We have a Facebook site which will be kept updated or please just give us a call if you have any questions or you would like to order books. Our contact details are still the same – Phone 3396 7707 and the website is http://www.heavenlybooks.net.au
Thank you to everyone for your support during the transition and we look forward to this new journey in reaching more people with a great range of inspirational material. Bob and Linda
I’m so sad,
When i buy a toy or any thing to do with that i go there, even if it cost a bit more, because i like to support them.
